Tarapoto (founded: Santa Cruz de Motilones Tarapoto, August 20, 1782) is a city in northeastern Peru, located at an altitude of 250 meters along the river Shilcayo tributary of May. It is a major tourist and commercial cities of the Peruvian Amazon. It currently has a population of 120,000 inhabitants according to 2007 census, making it the most populous city of the department of San Martin. The city, located in the district of Tarapoto, a conurbation with a population of the districts of La Banda de Shilcayo and Morales. Known as the City of Palms
